MSD School Board Minutes - 03/13/2002

Special Board Meeting Minutes
March 13, 2002

CALL TO ORDER/FLAG SALUTE/INTRODUCTIONS

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Mary Mattison, Board Chair.

Board members in attendance were Mary Mattison, Judy Boxx, Sheri Folsom, Charlie Crabtree, and Rob Olson.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

STUDY SESSION - High School Culminating Project

A number of MHS staff members/administrators joined the board for a continued discussion of issues relating to the implementation of a high school culminating project. Particular attention in the discussion was focused on the possible introduction of a "senior project" as a high school graduation requirement. The State Board of Education has determined that all school districts will require a high school culminating project, to be developed at the local level, by the graduating class of 2008.

It was agreed that the board looks favorably on the work done to date in the development of plans for the high school culminating project, including the senior project. The board recommended and requested that special efforts be made to provide information to parents regarding the project and to hear parent questions and suggestions. It was also recognized that the district intends to work toward the establishment of board policy to include a senior project as a graduation requirement. This process could be completed prior to the start of the 2002-2003 school year. This timeline would allow for implementation of this requirement with the graduating class of 2006.

EXECUTIVE SESSION - Review Personnel Performance

The board went into executive session to review personnel performance at 8:55 p.m., and returned to regular session at 9:15 p.m.

ADJOURNMENT

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m. by Chair Mary Mattison.
