Meridian Schools Work to Prevent Bullying

The problem of student-to-student harassment, intimidation and bullying is a concern that is being addressed by schools across the nation. Previously, we reported steps taken by our local district to combat this problem behavior including the adoption of a Board Policy which defines and prohibits such conduct. As we implement this policy and take additional measures to assure a physically and emotionally safe environment for students, we plan to provide information to help keep parents and community members aware and involved.

With the increasing emphasis on this issue, it is important to have a clear understanding of what bullying is. Although district policy clearly defines harassment, intimidation and bullying, it may be helpful to share a more simple definition as follows: Bullying is when one child or a group of children repeatedly picks on another child (often one who is seen as weaker and more vulnerable). Bullying is different from fighting or teasing. What makes it different is the way the bully repeatedly shows power over the other child. Being controlled and repeatedly picked on can make a child a victim.

It should also be noted that bullying can be inflicted on another person's body, property, self-esteem or social acceptance.

The following statements summarize some key points about the problem of bullying behavior: Bullying most frequently occurs at school or on school transportation, usually where adults are not immediately present. To stop bullying, adults must take a stand and intervene. Early intervention can prevent more serious problems later. Bullying is a threat to the well being of young people. There is a link between bullying and recent school shootings (shooters were victims of bullying). There is an apparent link between bullying and future criminal behavior. Bullies look for victims who are socially isolated and passive. True bullies are characterized by a high need for power and control coupled with a lack of empathy for others.

The Meridian School District is in the process of implementing a plan to combat bullying. The plan includes the following components:

  • Adopt and implement a district policy prohibiting bullying
  • Clearly communicate expectations and consequences to students, parents and staff
  • Clearly communicate nature of problem to students, parents and staff
  • Consistently apply firm and fair school discipline plan through the leadership of the Principal with the support of all employees
  • Strengthen student supervision practices
  • Focus on district-wide cultivation of a positive school climate

We enlist and welcome the support and involvement of parents and community members as our valued partners in these efforts.
